Judge Bars Public from City Worker’s Stress Claim Hearing

The case involves a woman who used to work in the Lawrence, MA Department of Public Works for the city’s then-mayor. The woman is currently receiving a tax-free salary as well as medical benefits for life, but the judge has barred the public from a hearing regarding those disability payments.

Prince Lobel Partner Rob Bertsche, the Eagle-Tribune’s attorney, is appealing the judge’s decision to exclude the public, stating that the judge “exceeded his authority today. The judge today turned a presumptively open hearing into a secret tribunal. His orders deprive city employees from monitoring how the government determines their rights to compensation upon disability.”
