Joseph S. Sano is a partner in Prince Lobel’s Litigation and
Insurance and Reinsurance Practice Groups, and a member of the firm's management committee. Prior to joining the firm, he was a partner with the Boston office of
Morrison, Mahoney & Miller, and a shareholder of Denenberg, Tuffley, Black
Hopkins & Ewald, P.C. in Southfield, Michigan.
Joe's practice emphasizes the effective resolution of
complex civil disputes. He provides strategic advice to – and representation of
– businesses in the litigation, arbitration, and resolution of specialized
insurance and reinsurance coverage matters involving environmental
impairments, as well as media and publishing and intellectual property liabilities,
professional liability, fair claims practices, property damage,
and product liability.
In addition, he represents businesses in commercial
disputes, including the investigation, defense and prosecution of direct claims
involving environmental harms. His experience in connection with environmental
claims includes selection and coordination of scientific and other expertise
regarding environmental testing, plume tracking, selection of remedial
alternatives, natural resource damage assessment and cost recovery. He has also counseled and represented clients
with respect to antitrust litigation, non-competition and trade secrecy
agreements, marketing arrangements, and national sponsorships.
Joe has been an advocate and counselor to business clients
in numerous state and federal courts throughout the Commonwealth, and in jurisdictions
throughout the country. He has extensive trial experience in insurance,
reinsurance, contract, business tort, and antitrust cases in state and federal
courts. In his career, he has acted as national coordinating counsel, directing
a team of 18 in-house attorneys and more than a dozen outside law firms in
multiparty environmental coverage disputes across the country.
Joe founded and is the principal contributor to the firm's
first law-related blog, Consider The Risks,
addressing current issues in insurance law and risk management. He is a
frequent speaker regarding insurance, reinsurance and electronic discovery
matters. Recent publications include Judicial Consolidation of Arbitrations:
From Chaos to Predictability, 14 Journal of Reinsurance 77 (Fall 2006), and
preparation of the damages section of the property insurance chapter of the
NASP Certified Subrogation Professional Training Guide (2005).
Joe is also a co-founder and a director of the recently formed
Massachusetts Reinsurance Bar Association (MReBA), a first-of-its kind
